One of the bands I was looking forward to seeing at this edition of 'Copenhell Festival' was Sweden’s TRIBULATION. Their 2015 release “The Children Of The Night” struck hard. I was aware of them since before but never really got into them but both the artistry and music on this record really appealed to me. That they were scheduled at the same time as another must see at the 'Sweden Rock Festival' bill stung badly, in the end I chose the other band on at the same time. I did manage to catch them at 'Muskelrock' though and they sounded amazing even if the indoor stage at that Festival provide the best condition to sound your best. Still it's a rather big step form that stage to the big 'Hades Stage' here.

But even here they impressed me. Like I said for KING DIAMOND, it always does a bigger impression when the esthetics are in place also and even if they don't have stage props and so, there's still unity in the members’ appearance, how the lights are designed that goes extremely well with TRIBULATION's music.

It started off in an amazing way with “Strange Gateways Beckon”, also opens “Children Of The Night”, and the band really surprised me how well they filled the stage, with the flow in their moves and how spectacular everything looked. It was a little funny getting away from the photo-pit since most all standing around me was referring to the female guitarist, Jonathan Hultén. For sure, his androgynous style almost fooled me too. And how the hell he managed to move around the way he did in those shoes is beyond me. “Melancholia” is another great one from the same album and that one too sounded fantastic. Towards the end of the set my favorite from that album “The Motherhood of God” also appeared. I love the mix between the mellow and very harsh riffs and it amazed me throughout the set how good the balance and drive was between the raw and the mellow. So, the last day of the festival started off very good, so good I was thinking it was going to be hard for the rest of the bands during the day to come up to TRIBULATION's standards.

TRIBULATION setlist:

01. “Strange Gateways Beckon”
02. “Melancholia”
03. “Winds”
04. “Rånda”
05. “Ultra Silvam”
06. Intro – “Cauda Pavonis”
07. “The Motherhood Of God”
08. “When The Sky Is Black With Devils”

For some reason I did listen more to the bands I was going to see during the festival this year, however I forgot one little detail on a few occasions. To verify the information and look up what it really said. So I was rather sure I was going for GRUESOME, the US Death Metal all-star band... I realized immediately how wrong was I but this mistake actually was a good one. As I probably wouldn't have gone to see GRUSOM, the Danish Heavy Rock, Stoner band. But I'm glad I did. Or it was more like the hysteric 70's Rock bands, like ELP going nuts or something like that. Stoner is not really the right label. The energy coming out of stage was fantastic and it was so fun to watch them play even if I wasn't familiar with the music. Vocalist Nicolaj Hoffmann Jul was bouncing around like crazy and how he was able to breathe as also the vocal lines in GRUSOM's music was intense.

It calmed down a bit towards the end of the set, at least the onstage movement. And then, it got easier to focus on the bands' music too. And there were a few songs standing out, “The Reaper” with its stompy rhythm and the bands trademark (ish) song “Gruesome”. In the mellow parts Nicolaj's voice touched upon the Glenn Danzig feel which suited the music really well. And then also Heavy “Evil” ending GRUSOM's set stood out. So being wrong sometimes makes it all right. I'm very happy I got to see this band since they really rocked hard. Not what I had my mind set to but that was nothing a beer couldn't change. And frankly, GRUSOM is better beer drinking music than GRUESOME, for sure.

GRUSOM setlist:

01. “Intro”
02. “Come Closer”
03. “The Journey”
04. “Cold Stone”
05. “Bleed For You”
06. “The Reaper”
07. “No Gods”
08. “Gruesome”
09. “Evil”

Sweden’s BOMBUS have been around for quite some time now but I’ve only seen them once and that was a long time ago. That show gave me mixed impression but it’s clear the years have done them good as this was very convincing, very powerful and held lots of energy. Not that the party needed more of a boost after GRUSOM, but BOMBUS sure took it up one more step. Fantastic “Master The Reality” worked perfectly this last festival day. Ok, the place was packed since many took the chance to see BLACK SABBATH for one last time. The gnawing beat got people going. I like the mix of the riffing and melodies. It’s clear I’ve been missing out by not checking them out after that first gig I saw.

Also freshly released “Deadweight” worked very well. I really loved the structure of the chorus, the small pauses in the riff followed by a chewier passage. The song was released as a single from new “Repeat Until Death”. From which the back-drop also was from. The layout created a very cool effect of extreme depth. Very efficient to make the ‘Pandaemonium Stage’ look both bigger and more employed at the same time. The title track followed next and that too sounded great.

I was really impressed how dynamic and professional BOMBUS appeared now and it’s awesome to see. I love to have my preconceptions shattered, especially when the performance is much better than I expected it to be. So yes, BOMBUS worked well too.

BOMBUS setlist:

01. “Let Her Die”
02. “Rust”
03. “Master The Reality”
04. “Horde Of Flies”
05. “Biblical”
06. “Deadweight”
07. “Repeat Until Death”
08. “Enter The Night”
09. “Into The Fire”

I remember when CLAWFINGER first appeared on the scene and their hits became massively popular among most everyone and people who really despised heavy music suddenly was a Metalhead. I really hated the whole thing and that there was incorporation of Rap in the music too, jeez. And then, came the self-titled “Clawfinger” with the “Two Sides” song so I had to admit it sounded pretty damn good. And then I got to see CLAWFINGER live and it was just to surrender. Whether I like Rap or not, when a band performs as CLAWFINGER does it’s hard to not be caught up in it all and start digging.

The power they have when performing is phenomenal, everything is so intense and dynamic. Even on a massive stage as ‘Helveti’. It’s clear they were, and still are a huge band. And not only looking at the performance when saying this, also the head-count in the crowed showed many people were looking forward to this show. And it was a show, mainly Zak Tell tearing the stage down; and not only the stage. He was walking out on one flank where the photo-pit was a little narrower and starting to act as he was diving. He got some in the front row on with the plan but I never expected him to jump but he did and not once. He was out crowd-surfing, clinging on to the security fence bugging the security…

There was a section of music that really stood out for me, songs that I really love which were great to get to hear live. Starting with “None The Wiser” and “Nothing Going On” and of course the one that got me hooked “Two Sides”. CLAWFINGER’s usage of pre-recorded stuff really works in their favor. It’s like this it should be used, like an addition to the music where the dynamics are kept intact and just enhances. Not to create a wall of sound.

It sure was good, I still haven’t gotten around to dig those old ones on record but “The Truth” worked live so perhaps that will come around soon too. One song that I completely had forgotten about was the one which closed the set, “Do What I Say”. Those first notes, the little melody really sent shivers down my spine and so many memories, and again I had to eat my perception as this one too is an oldie. And I can easily say that this was one of my favorite shows of the ‘Copenhell Festival’.

CLAWFINGER setlist:

01. “Prisoners”
02. “Zeros & Heroes”
03. “Money Power Glory”
04. “Rosegrove”
05. “Nigger”
06. “Catch Me”
07. “Out To Get Me”
08. “None The Wiser”
09. “Nothing Going On”
10. “Two Sides”
11. “Recipe For Hate”
12. “Biggest & The Best”
13. “The Price We Pay”
14. “The Truth”
15. “Do What I Say”
