“Sorry, you can’t get in, the concert is sold out” was the message a few guys in front of me got on their way in to Sticky Fingers. I had everything sorted of course so I felt the jealous stares on my back as I swished around the corner and up the stairs leaving a bunch behind. I think this is the first time ever I’ve been to a completely sold out show in Gothenburg without counting the shows by IRON MAIDEN and METALLICA at massive Ullevi or similar places.

So it was a good opportunity for NEONFLY to show off their skills playing before MAGNUM. And yes, they gained a few new fans during the evening even though the area in the front rows was rather empty while the bar was packed during their set. What can I say? There’s absolutely nothing to complain about this band. NEON FLY sound amazing in what they do, they have catchy songs but it’s absolutely too soft for my taste; too much Pop and not enough Rock. One thing that struck me was the low volume of the guitars during a live show, even if the players are using Metal axes from Dean Guitars for example. Anyway NEONFLY looked a lot more Rock than they sounded. It was a lot of fun watching drummer Boris Le Gal play; he was one with the music, made a lot of faces while playing and at the same time was talking to himself (at least that was what it looked like). Else I found NEONFLY rather charming and I have to admit it’s hard to resist the British accent during the new songs. Their whole appearance was actually the profit of the show because NEONFLY came across as very genuine and devoted to their music and that should be respected. Just because I wasn’t too fond of their style of music doesn't mean it was bad, not at all.

Sticky Fingers is a very good place for midsize concerts, especially when it becomes crowded. The atmosphere is always good and the only downside is that it’s almost possible to move to the bar and come back again. It’s not that the place is packed straight through. It was still actually quite airy in the first 5-6 rows which I really enjoy and this is absolutely to prefer rather than have good access to the bar. Also, Sticky Fingers is as small to make sure you get a very intimate show.

It was a cheerful MAGNUM that hit the stage that evening and the joy brought to stage by was spread fast around the venue. One really cool thing was that the newest tracks got very good response like my favorite from “On The 13:th Day” “Dance Of The Black Tattoo” during which people were singing like crazy straight through something that is rather rare for similar classic bands where it seems like it’s the old stuff that counts. And sure, the screams of passion that came as the first notes of “How Far Jerusalem” or during “Les Morts Dansant” were more intense than anything else. Both sounded fantastic. A bit into the show the people in the front started to chant “Tony, Tony, Tony…” of course referring to mainman Tony Clarkin. I don’t think Mr Clarkin is very used to this since his face turned slightly red and he looked rather uncomfortable with this treatment. He broke out of his else rather grumpy attitude and did serve a short solo to honor this behavior.

One of the most magical moments of the show was doubtless “The Spirit”; during this one the crowd went completely crazy and I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a cooler sing-a-long (or takeover perhaps?) ever, not at a venue like Sticky Fingers at least. The crowd actually sung the whole song, and damn loud as well. Bob Catley looked really touched and still a bit surprised. I heard that this track was removed from the set for other shows in Scandinavia. A shame really since it seemed to have been one of the more appreciated in the set. One more thing that stood out with MAGNUM was that they seemed to be playing with so much joy. They seemed to have a great time on stage and that really affected the crowd as well. It was one of those real feel good moments when you leave the concert with a huge smile on your face wondering how long it would take until next time you get to see MAGNUM play.

The hit-parade in the end with “Vigilante” followed by “Kingdom Of Madness” and “Sacred Hour” as the set closer really boosted the crowd to the max. Some had been waiting for the classics, that’s true but the major part of the crowd was full on straight through the set. So yes, this was an amazing concert, MAGNUM stands stronger than ever, both when it comes to performing on stage as well as putting out records. For me this could easily be an annual event, or at least I hope it won’t take too long until I get to see MAGNUM play live again.
