Sunstorm - Emotional Fire

Sunstorm - Emotional Fire

(CD, Frontiers Records, 2012)

So, when is this man planning to stop torturing our emotional selves? Here’s the fresh SUNSTORM album from Joe Lynn Turner and if you think you’ve been by now fed with this significant artist’s sensational vocal and musical melodies then try to come up with a proper vocabulary after you face “Emotional Fire”. Burn, my friends, burn...

He’s offered obscure yet marvelous works with FANDANGO in the late 70s, he delivered the goods in easy with Ritchie Blackmore’s RAINBOW in the early-to-mid 80s, his voice shined on in Yngwie Malmsteen and DEEP PURPLE albums while he also wrote some really emotional material in his solo works. And, recently, the melodic Rock world had the honor to see Joe building some exciting musicianship in SUNSTORM with a series of albums that lack nothing regarding power, melody and passionate expression. Now, with “Emotional Fire” the unique singer declares he’s here to stay and we have really no excuse claiming the opposite listening to the songlist featured in this early 2012 release.

The dominant major melodies are here, the astounding backing keys offer the most to the songs’ atmosphere, the simple yet ample rhythm section sets the background for some great hooks to be unveiled... and on top of all there’s a voice you cannot resist but bow to after so many years of performance. Really, there’s nothing problematic in this CD: repetitive or have-listened-to-before riffs or harmonies are something you should expect to face, nonetheless. Still, with a powerful fitting production (call me Dennis Ward) giving the boost needed to the songs’ touching nature, “Emotional Fire” shall be one of the albums you lately asked for to accompany your lonely moments or personal mood swings.

“Gina” was originally included on Michael Bolton’s “The Hunger” album – Joe performed guest vocals back then – and the title track initially appeared in Cher’s “Heart Of Stone” LP, where again Joe sung backing vocals. The rest of the songlist is the result of songwriting deeds between Turner and some noted partners of his, aiming to what this third SUNSTORM album is all about: first class AOR, melodic Rock and Hard Rock music that shall haunt you down if you lately felt your passion for warm melodies had worn out. Melodic Rock music can be so extreme for your heartstrings when operated from artists like Joe Lynn Turner... you’ve been warned.
