(CD, Yesterrock/Universal, 2014)
You can’t judge a book by its cover, right? And I’m talking about the front artwork of the self-titled BOYSVOICE CD because it does not say anything to the Rock/Metal fan... Thankfully, the inside product is way much better making the re-release of the original 1990 album a nice treat for fans of melodic and powerful Hard Rock.
BOYSVOICE released two albums in the early 90s and another one in 2005. Of all three, “Boysvoice” is their no-questions-asked best offering and it’s a good idea for the Yesterrock label to put it out on CD since I only know about the existence of a scarce vinyl pressing from 1990. But enough with the historical info; let’s move on to the musical content. BOYSVOICE perform a pleasant mix of melodic and rocking Hard Rock the German way (with a little of America’s golden touch, to be exact) and fans of bands like BONFIRE, CRAAFT, FAIR WARNING and VICTORY will definitely find enough entertaining moments in this tracklist. The guitars are potent and some leads will knock your heads out, while the vocals of Mani Gruber will probably remind you of Claus Lessman’s singing style if you listen deeper.
Omitting the first seconds of the “Bad Boys” song (what’s that? Rap Metal?), “Boysvoice” is an album you should probably sink your teeth into if you’re a fan of the Hard Rock movement going on in Central Europe in the late 80s and early 90s. That said, start looking for this reissue and if you’re a vintage vinyl lover, try to locate the LP pressing somewhere in the Net; you won’t be disappointed.
