Finnr’s Cane - A Portrait Painted By The Sun

(CD, Prophecy Productions, 2013)

The debut full length by the Canadian Atmospheric Black/Doom Metal band FINNR’S CANE, released in 2010, was characterized as a winter album due to the cold atmosphere with melodies creating frozen landscapes. Sure, being from Canada provides the know-how to creating such a cold album, simply because the musicians experience the rough climatic changes and live in snowy landscapes. Three years later, the Canadians have returned with the sophomore effort “A Portrait Painted By The Sun”.

Three are the main elements of this album: the slow atmospheric and ambient melodies, the fast Black Metal outbursts and the Doom Metal haunting and agonizing moments. FINNR’S CANE know how to create beautiful melodies, covered with a chilled atmosphere, making the listener feel the winter deep in his bones. In the biggest part of the album, the music is instrumental with mainly slow tempos and slow melodic riffs, while the guitar distortion, the effect of gusting winds and the slow high pitched vocals create the freezing atmosphere I was talking about. The band often steps into the Doom Metal realm, delivering sad melodies that combined with the agonizing screams create a rather depressive feeling and “A Great Storm” is the perfect example of my saying. The Black Metal character of the first songs of the tracklist comes forth via the fast outbursts, the high-pitched vocals and amazing frozen riffs.

“A Portrait Painted By The Sun” should be your choice if you’re searching for something to match the cold winter. Get comfortable, dim the lights and close your eyes to start your trip above beautiful snow-covered landscapes. Trust me, I’ve done this and the result was amazing. If you liked the first album of the Canadians, then you will love this one. In case you haven’t, and the aforementioned Metal genres are your kind of music, then you will love it the same.
