It’s good to see a band work as hard as ELEINE does. And for a rather new band on the scene, it feels really big to host a release-party at a big club and actually packing the place out. It’s a well deserved response and there is no doubt there.

Before ELEINE, and to heat the place up, CHRONUS took on the stage. There is a cool thing going on in the Swedish scene at the moment with bands stepping in new directions, mixing and mending styles into something new. For some reason I was expecting CHRONUS to play Stoner or Fuzz Rock though. I don’t know who I'd mixed them up with, but it sure got better this way. It’s not far off to compare CHRONUS to TRIBULATION. They're a bit of that Goth / Heavy combination when it comes to the music. And all dressed up with ghoul-like make-up, they're like a little brother to TRIBULATION. A little less strict to the concept and not fully the same character in their music. There were a few songs I really liked from the CHRONUS set; “Shepherd” was the first one to make its mark. The chorus and the stomp in the song got me going. Also, “Avarice” went down well. The break in key during the chorus stood out and it's little things like those that hooks me in to the music.

The fascinating thing with not knowing a band before seeing them play is to see if they can catch your interest and hold it for the whole show. I don’t know if it would had been different if I'd listened to CHRONUS prior to the gig or not. But the downside was, even if the gig itself was good, it became much of the same. What I think is TRIBULATION's success is that they've managed to write some really sticky parts and passages without deviating from their style or sound. CHRONUS is definitely on the right track but the mid-section passed me by this night.

With that being said, I still have to add I really enjoyed CHRONUS' performance, they had a very good drive and flow in their music. Towards the end, “City Of Lights” also stood out. The snappy riff topped with a more floating vocal line always work. It did this night too.

CHRONUS setlist:

01. “Mt Of Madness”
02. “Shepherd”
03. “Avarice”
04. “Setting Sun”
05. “Pharos”
06. “Sun”
07. “Black Water”
08. “City Of Light”
09. “Baron”

As said, The Tivoli in Helsingborg was close to become sold-out that night. ELEINE have gathered a well-deserved following and even if this is their home turf it wasn't only friends and family that showed up. There were even fans from outside of Sweden attending the event and everyone wanted to see ELEINE present their brand new “Until The End”.

Since this might be a one off thing, as ELEINE played “Until The End” in its entirety, I definitely understand why people took the opportunity to visit this cold and windy town. I mean, with this being announced prior to the show, you're sure to get your favorite track(s). And that's the first thing I reacted on. Normally bands pick up a couple of songs after a new release. I think it's bold and utterly cool of a band to do a thing like this and it really worked. Why shouldn't it? The record is very well-written and worked through, it has a fantastic flow to it and there are definitely no fillers. The show got a little predictable of course but it doesn't really matter since it's all good. Apparently, opener “Story Untold” caught people’s interest, at least the melody that was sung even after the song had ended. “Echoes” and new single “Sanity” went down really well too. But as “From The Grave” is one of my favorites from the record I was looking forward to hearing that one and it sounded just as good as I expected.

Seeing ELEINE opening for W.A.S.P. their whole appearance struck me, the esthetics around the band are fantastic, it's special and fits perfectly together with the music. Madeleine “Eleine” Liljestam of course takes a lot of the attention. How could it be any other way? She's a divine creature when she's on stage. It's many small things but it does a lot for the whole experience. Last time I saw ELEINE, the wings in “Break Take Live” struck me. Those appeared later this night too. In this case, she also wore deer antlers for one song (stupid enough I forgot to write it down and can't remember for which now) in the middle of the set. It was definitely another eye-catcher. I'm normally not a huge fan of Symphonic Metal with female vocals but as ELEINE have both structure and dynamics in their music, this goes down well. The addition of Rickard Ekberg's harsh vocals on a few occasions makes ELEINE heavier than most other bands in the genre. I really like that too as it else usually tend to be very lightweight. But not here. This is ELEINE's event and of course the sound was perfect. Apart from a small technical mishap when the show kicked off and both guitars and vocals had been turned down in the PA it all sounded perfect.

Another favorite from the record is “Another Rite”; the sticky melody went down really well live too. It flows smoothly and is the odd one on the record, it breaks everything off which is needed. The crowd was with the band straight through the set. “Hell Moon (We Shall Never Die)” ended the very impressive main set but as that one doesn't end the record everyone knew more was coming. ELEINE got a very big cheer anyhow before they made it back out on stage. As already mentioned, for “Break Take Live” Madeleine showed up in those golden wings. The effect of them, how she moves or whirls on stage is still captivating even if I've seen it before.

Then it was time to wrap up for real and Rickard took on the microphone to encourage the already charged audience to sing along to “Death Incarnate”. But before kicking off the song, he lured a few shouts out of the frontline, just because he liked it. It was no problem to grant his will. And that one ended a fantastic show. Still, the evening wasn't really done as ELEINE was out within minutes and posed for photos with everyone who wanted and of course signed their brand new record. So, it all really was a package wrapped up perfectly.

ELEINE setlist:

01. “Story Untold”
02. “Echoes”
03. “Sanity”
04. “From The Grave”
05. “Whisper My Child”
06. “Until The End”
07. “Please”
08. “Another Rite”
09. “Hell Moon (We Shall Never Die)”
10. “Break Take Live”
11. “Death Incarnate”
