I knew I’ve seen some Marco Mendoza releases a while back but apart from that I didn’t know anything about this show. What would he play, what could be expected. Apparently he visits Copenhagen rather frequently judging from his sayings like; “thank you for coming again” and “as long as you show up I’ll keep coming back”...

I’m still very fascinated that a musician of Marco’s calibre is doing shows at an intimate place like High Voltage is. I think it is super-cool and I highly appreciate these opportunities and will take them at any chance given. No doubt about that. To get to see amazing musicians as this up close is fantastic and I really love every second of the shows. This night also featured drummer Pino Liberti and guitarist Fabio Cerrone with local boy Anders Bo as a special guest. A fantastic band that really made it all come alive in a fantastic way. I was already aware that Marco is an incredible bass player but been also a good singer came as a bit of a surprise. His falsetto really sounded amazing and his range is phenomenal.

After A few songs into the set he picked up the Ted Nugent song “Hey Baby”; the jammy song went down really well and were a good fun to watch. The thing with this one, and all other songs which also kind of took away the drive from the show was the endless jam-sessions. I love it when a band walks outside the regular song structure and these guys certainly had it, dealing with musicians that can handle it and keep it creative throughout the songs. But yes, it took away a bit from the intensity of the show.

But then, when Marco asked the sound-guy to almost turn off the PA and dim the lights moving away from the microphone and playing stuff almost without amplification having the crowd snapping their fingers as the rhythm. That was truly amazing even if it was a long passage. I mean, High Voltage is intimate whether you like it or not. But this gem made it even closer and the dynamics created when the volume was almost off to when the band played full on was absolutely fabulous. The closeness came in another way also as Marco took his bass and walked around the venue playing parts of the set from the floor in front of the stage chatting away with (mainly the girls) the crowd and in between both singing and playing for individuals in the crowd.

It’s hard to keep track of all the songs played; it was an extensive concert, well over 2 hours. But I don’t think it was that many songs actually, a lot of music yes... As cool as I thought it was what Marco Mendoza played I was also longing for some more hit songs to pick up the pace a bit, some THIN LIZZY, WHITESNAKE or so... But that’s all me, for not being familiar with his solo stuff. But I’d rather have taken something right in my taste instead of the James Brown classic “I Got You (I Feel Good)” at that point of the show. What was also very cool was to look how Marco managed everything on stage, giving away passes for solos, almost like a tag-team. Anders Bo was pushed to the middle of the stage to show off his skills. I love the way he’s playing, a good bluesy vibe, at least here, but still lots of good melodies and cool licks. Marco was tapping on his shoulder a few times but Anders continued to play anyway.

THIN LIZZY’s “Chinatown” showed up towards the end of the set and it all sounded absolutely great. And it was a very good night, very cosy and intimate show. It was fun to see and I’m really glad I went. I should have done my homework better prior to the show though. But if it was true as he said, Marco Mendoza and band should be back in Copenhagen soon so hopefully I’ll get another chance and by then I will be familiar with his solo releases as well.
