What else can be better than to start the new year with a small weekend-festival? Not much, if you’d ask me, especially while having a lineup like this one. Perhaps there weren't the biggest names on the bill but some never-seen-before, and then, bands as SACRED STEEL and HOLOCAUST are always worth seeing again.

German FIRE started the event, which really was the promoter’s (Rüdiger) 50th birthday party, in a very good way. You can always count on German Heavy Metal to be good. It's very rare that bands don't deliver high quality in their performances and FIRE was no exception. What is also very common with German bands on this level is that it's a bit a mix of everything within the Heavy Metal label. Set-opener, 7” “Save Me”, which also is the band’s sole release to this day, is a bit doomy with a Stoner feel to it, a very good song which worked fine live. The rest was leaning more towards IRON MAIDEN styled music; true epics with fantastic melodies and vocal lines. Both “King Is Dead” and “Another Rainy Day” sounded fantastic and really showed off FIRE's talent, both as musicians and song writers. FIRE also managed to do a very good version of the BLACK SABBATH Classic “Snowblind”. Knowing how high pitched the vocal lines are for this one it was admirable that Klamsi nailed them flawlessly. This got the crowd to wake up and it all boosted upwards from there, the fast and a bit more Punk-y “Strong Temptation” ended their set to great cheers from the audience. It wasn't packed yet but still good enough to create a great atmosphere even this early in the night.

FIRE setlist:

01. “Save Me”
02. “Enough Is Enough
03. “King Is Dead
04. “Another Rainy Day”
05. “Walking On Bones”
06. “Snowblind”
07. “Strong Temptation”

MYSTERY BLUE was one of the reasons that made us go down to Hamburg this early January weekend. They did a fantastic job warming up for ANVIL during October / November last year. The downside then was that I wasn't familiar with their music to any extent. Digging in it surely shows to be mighty fine Heavy Metal we are talking about with MYSTERY BLUE. And to see that they had fans gathered in front of the stage in the change-over already was great to see. The fact that at least one knew them that well that he added more songs to the setlist was of course a lot of fun.

And hell yes, MYSTERY BLUE delivered again, even though they had a new bassist, young Florian Trug, in place of Stéphane Noerberg and guitarist Jean Matera as the temporary replacement of Sylvain Ebersoldt who was on vacation. “Slave To Blood” from the fantastic “Metal Slaves” opened the set and it worked fine. But it wasn't until “Evil Spell” when the crowd really woke up. Perhaps it was those €2 Astra Beer's that started to do the talking, I don't know. One of my favorites is “Running With The Pack” and that too, worked perfectly.

Especially since they got help from Andreas Babuschkin from PARAGON who although was rather drunk and looked a little dim he nailed all this parts. I really like Nathalie Geyer's attitude on stage, pretty and sexy dressed but still that fun Rock 'n' Roll drive. This together with her little crazy type voice makes it all fantastic if you’d ask me. I love it. From there on it was a very good vibe, both from the crowd and the band, all good fun. “Psycho City” and “Claws Of Steel” were two more live favorites this time, they sounded fantastic.

The MYSTERY BLUE show was quite a run-over, it felt a little bit like the night was over already even if it was only halfway through. But with a start like this, with FIRE and MYSTERY BLUE the remaining bands would get a tough time matching it, that's for sure.

MYSTERY BLUE setlist:

01. “Slave To Blood”
02. “Shades Of Death”
03. “Evil Spell”
04. “Running With The Pack”
05. “Metal Attack”
06. “Psycho City”
07. “Claws Of Steel”
08. “No Way Out”
09. “Hell & Fury” / “Roller Coaster Ride”

Belgian all female BLACK SABBATH cover band really drew a crowd. And that BLACK SABBATH covers work well in Germany as was shown with FIRE already. It's always curious to see this kind of things, if it's good for real or good to be girls. Unfortunately, in many cases it's the latter of the two. And after a bit of mess with the sound during the first two songs “Black Sabbath” and “War Pigs” it started to sound ok.

NIGHTWITCHES did well with the show though; it was a good performance and a cool setlist. “Into The Void” sounded really good, here they managed to capture the heavy groove of the song and it had a great flow. There's no doubt that they brought attention to the event though as the place was really packed when NIGHTWITCHES were playing. And everyone present seemed to enjoy getting a doze of BLACK SABBATH very much. There's no denying that with a beer in hand and good company, these songs are immortal and always fun to hear live. NIGHTWITCHES really nailed “Iron Man” also, it was as heavy as it needs to be and the beat was good and slow. So absolutely, it worked fine and it sounded decent. To have “Electric Funeral” as the finale felt a little strange but again it worked and wrapped up the gig in a good way.

NIGHTWITCHES setlist:

01. “Black Sabbath”
02. “War Pigs”
03. “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”
04. “N.I.B”
05. “Into The Void”
06. “A National Acrobat”
07. “Children Of The Grave”
08. “Paranoid”
09. “Iron Man”
10. “Electric Funeral”

I had no doubt that SACRED STEEL would deliver, they always do! It's always fun to see them play and it had been a while since the last time I had seen which made the excitement a bit greater. They had a good bunch of fans waiting for them by the stage, also very good to see. The downside was that the cheap prices in the bar really started to get people beyond drunk at this point and it was a little tough to stick to the front to get some pictures.

It didn't get easier when SACRED STEEL kicked of their set with “Heavy Metal Sacrifice” from brand new record with the same title. That record sounds fantastic but is a little softer and more melodic than the rest of SACRED STEEL's releases. It suits them very much. In this case it sounded like the classic SACRED STEEL which also worked for the song. “Lust For Blood” followed and it didn't calm down with that one I tell you. Gerrit didn't fear the crowd though and was virtually in their faces all the time. The stage at Bambi Galore is rather low so it don't create very much distance between the crowd and the band-members on stage.

Songs like “Sacred Bloody Steel” and “Hail To The Godz Of War” are perfect for events like this so it was great to hang out with all the cool people present and scream along to the songs, they sure are perfect for a live event. As usual SACRED STEEL sounded fantastic, amazingly tight and precise. They still have lot of fun on stage and that makes it even better. On stage left, Jens Sonnenberg and Kai Schindelar looked a bit cramped as there wasn't much space for them to move. It's actually a wonder no one fell off stage as one of the monitors was slightly higher than the stage.

It was clear that people had come to see SACRED STEEL as everyone stuck around to the end, “Heavy Metal To The End” closed the main set but since there was nowhere to go the band just waited for some extra cheers from the crowd before the remainder of the songs was kicked off. Again, it worked perfectly with “Metal Is War” which was followed by “Wargods Of Metal”. And the absolutely last one, hand-written on the list, the OMEN classic “Battle Cry”. Gerrit's voice differs from J.D. Kimball's and basically from everyone who has ever sung with OMEN. But this too worked and it was good to see that this one too got a very good response from the crowd.

In one way, the evening felt very long, in another it was over in no time. Perhaps it was the €2 beer's that helped here. But it sure was a very good evening, great fun and good bands. If day two would be as fun as the first time, it was something for tomorrow to tell.

SACRED STEEL setlist:

01. Intro - “Glory Ride”
02. “Heavy Metal Sacrifice”
03. “Lust For Blood”
04. “Maniacs Of Speed”
