ELUVEITIE / 3 INCHES OF BLOOD / HOLY GRAIL / SYSTEM DIVIDE

Date: 08th February, 2011
Venue: The Bottom Lounge
Ticket: $17 (€13)
Promoter: n/a

The last ten days or more, Chicago has been in the deep freeze with temperatures well below zero on the Celsius scale making you think twice before deciding to get out of the house. And not to mention going to a concert… One the other hand, just like SAXON say in “Denim And Leather”, sometime a metalhead has to go through ice and snow to see her/his favorite band. Of course, METAL KAOZ could not be stopped that working day and made it to the most convenient venue of The Bottom Lounge to get a hearty Folk Metal taste served by ELUVEITIE. There was an early start that night and if one adds the interview with ELUVEITIE we had scheduled it will become pretty obvious why we missed SYSTEM DIVIDE and most of the HOLY GRAIL setlist.

So, after the really nice interview with ELUVEITIE’s Anna (she was such a sweat talker) with made our way to the front rows a few minutes before the commencing of the Canadian Metal assault named 3 INCHES OF BLOOD. I have to admit that I hadn’t done my homework like I usually do and hence my knowledge of their music was minimal.

As it usually happens in The Bottom Lounge the time schedule was absolutely honored and 3 INCHES OF BLOOD took over the stage as planned. The first thing I noticed watching the band playing “Goatrider's Horde” was how solid they sounded! I mean, their performance was super tight fueled by their love for true Metal and their absolute concentration to play as many songs as possible. And so they did; they kept the breaks between songs really short and kept hitting us track by track. Despite the young audience (the average should have been around 20) there was an energetic response to the on-stage happenings proving how good 3 INCHES OF BLOOD looked and sounded. Ok, sometimes the vocals were lost in the mix but the guitar work was so amazing that one can neglect a minor glitch. The Canadians did a new song entitled “Lords Of Change” that was nothing out of the 3 INCHES OF BLOOD box; it was fast and heavy (sometimes there is nothing more to ask in a Metal gig). “We have made a video for the following song that MTV USA banned thinking it was too violent for you!” Cam Pipes said as a preamble to the fast “Silent Killer” that gave a reason to form a mosh-pit right in the middle of the venue. Well, it was not a genuine mosh-pit with all that random and in time silly pushing around… “Deadly Sinners” and “Battles and Brotherhood” were the last songs of their setlist and I am dead sure 3 INCHES OF BLOOD earned some fans that night. Great work guys!

Having 8 people on stage means a lot of work for the crew but surprisingly enough there was not delay in the preparations. I don’t know why, but this Metal genre seems to be very appealing to the young US metalheads who were anticipating the Swiss band with excitement and in times were quite disturbing (or we are just getting old…). Nevertheless, the lights went out and the “Otherworld” intro brought one by one ELUVEITIE on stage to face a welcome full of the aforementioned excitement. Due to the lack of space, ELUVEITIE members took predefined positions and remained there for the entire performance avoiding unwanted collisions… “Nil” and “Bloodstained Ground” were the first two songs performed with no pause in between but sadly with an average sound. The vocals were lost and the guitars were buried under the drums dominating volume. Ok, there were more than usual instruments in the mix but this is why you do soundcheck before you go live… right?

The sound issues were resolved and ELUVEITIE put the pedal to the Metal presenting a well balanced setlist with fast songs in the beginning and the end while lowering the tempo somewhere in the middle with slower tracks. It seems Anna has a more important role in the band taking more singing time in the last albums; her singing share was mainly in the leads of “Brictom” and “Omnos” proving that she has taken many steps forward after the last time I watched the band live on stage three years ago. After the departure of the Kirder borthers, Chrigel has stepped right in the spotlight drawing all the attention to him making the rest of the band members look kind of awkward standing on the sides of the stage. As I said, the stage was small to host 8 peoples on stage so, part of my previous saying has a pretty logical explanation.

The response of the audience was great and ELUVEITIE delivered all the songs with energy looking extremely happy on stage enjoying to the maximum the success of their latest album in the US. During “Thousandfold” Chrigel invited the winner of the ongoing contest in the North US live dates who had the chance to perform the song with the band, one event I found absolutely cool! ELUVEITIE hit us hard with the faster and older songs “Gray Sublime Archon” and “Your Gaulish War” while the always delightful “Inins Mona” comprised some singing along and a lot of jumping up and down. Personally, I enjoyed the most melodic “Slanias Song” (loved the flute melodies), the guitar driven “(Do)Minion” and the concert closer Tegernakô that was also the encore song.

Overall, ELUVEITIE did great that freezing night and I am sure satisfied everyone in the venue (could they be 200 faces there?). I considered myself also satisfied and I did have a great time despite the impression I had in moments that Chrigel was following a predefined path with less feeling in his performance. But, I could easily be wrong since being on the road so long can get an artist in such a situation. I totally recommend watching them live to get your treat of Gaulish taste (love the accent)!
