Stygian Crown - Stygian Crown

I really like when female-fronted Metal bands go against the ‘beauty-and-the-beast’ grain and the whole growling male vs female ethereal / operatic vocals, and instead go with vein-popping vocals characterized by that harsh Metal-lic hue, following the path carved by singers like HELLION’s Ann Boleyn and of that ilk. Southern California’s Doom metallers STYGIAN CROWN are fortunate to have Melissa Pinion, a powerful and classically trained singer with whom they create a pretty impressive sound that at first may remind of the Doom legends CANDLEMASS. Melissa’s vocals bring so much epicness and dynamics that grant STYGIAN CROWN a quite distinct and recognizable sound.

Guardian Of Lightning - Cosmos Tree

Sometimes I like to challenge my instincts and try to guess a band’s music style from its moniker, logo and maybe from the artwork on its debut release. In the case of GUARDIAN OF LIGHTNING, I can say with confidence that I failed miserably… The band’s name was giving me strong Power Metal vibes and the “Cosmos Tree” hinted Stoner Rock / Psychedelia... ‘Wrong and wrong’ was the verdict, but no matter what, I was interested to check them out. Not only do these Brazilians belong to a different Metal genre but they have created their own. That’s right; these guys play Thunder Metal and the reason for this distinction is that the songs are bass, and not guitar, driven. Now I am sure I got your attention, so let’s see what “Cosmos Tree” brings forth.

Paysage D'Hiver - Im Wald

For some reason, I find myself gravitating towards Black Metal albums for my listening pleasure during summer. Black Metal has a unique way of reminding me what I love about winter and how comforting is watching the snow falling as nature enters hibernation. Or it may as well be just the needed smack-in-the-face to snap out of midsummer’s heat... Whatever the case, it has become an unofficial tradition for me that I really enjoy. So, this late June found me going through vinyl records and digi-promos in search of a powerful cold / desolate / dark album. And lo and behold, Swiss Wintherr’s upcoming release under the PAYSAGE D'HIVER moniker, titled “Im Wald” (“In The Forest”), came at the right time (and season) for me...

Pale Divine - Consequence Of Time

There are different ways to define the arrow of time and pretty much everything is acceptable; from the number of grey hairs (or absence of hair all together), to the maturity level (faked or not), all the way to scientific definition of the entropy increase. I like to use band anniversaries to track time, although in some cases I find myself questioning when all this time has passed by. Be that as it may, PALE DIVINE are celebrating their 25th anniversary without re-releasing / re-recording (god forbid) old albums, but with dropping a solid piece of their own vintage progressive Doom Metal, titled “Consequence Of Time”, that pushed my mind towards the concept of time...
