Do you remember SLEEP? Of course you are! Matt Pike was a member of SLEEP and when they split up, he joined HIGH ON FIRE, while Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius formed OM. HIGH ON FIRE have released five albums and “De Vermis Mysteriis” is their sixth one. I believe that all their albums are a great mix of Stoner / Doom Metal while their best one is “Death Is This Communion”. So, let’s see what they have to offer with this one.

I think we all agree that HIGH ON FIRE was one of the best bands in the ‘00s and the first two albums are excellent pieces of groovy Metal. “De Vermis Mysteriis” translates into “The mysteries of the worm”: based on the fictional grimoire created by Robert Bloch and incorporated by H.P. Lovecraft into the lore of the Cthulu mythos. Musically, if you like the previous HIGH ON FIRE album and the latest releases of SLAYER, this would not disappoint you at all. As a side note I’d add that the production has been arranged by Kurt Ballou from CONVERGE.

The album opener “Serums Of Liao” shows what is about to follow; “Fertile Green” carries some SLAYER-esque riff and a certain MINISTRY vibe. HIGH ON FIRE remember the legendary band CATHEDRAL in “Madness Of An Architect” and in the insrtumental “Samsara” deliver some beautiful melodies with scattered blues influences. “Spiritual Rites” has some almost Thrash riff work and it feels like there is a lot of power hidden inside as “King Of Days” and “Madness Of An Architect” point towards the early days of BLACK SABBATH. The self-titled track is characterized by the fascinating drumming of Des Kensel and “Romulus And Remus” and the album closer “Warhorn” are mid tempo with awesome groovy rhythm sections; especially the last one builds a distinct psychedelic atmosphere somewhere in the middle.

I am pretty sure that most fans of this genre have already bought this album. HIGH ON FIRE keep delivering great quality of Stoner / Doom Metal and “De Vermis Mysteriis” is solid evidence.
