El Hijo De La Aurora – Wicca: Spells, Magic And Witchcraft Through The Ages

(CD, R.A.I.G. Records, 2011)
‘…and now, if you dare look into the hypnotic eyes…’
I have been always fascinated by the occultism and the ‘raw’ music beauty from countries like Peru. EL HIJO DE LA AURORA is a very obscure Doom Peruvian trio that drew my attention when I realized that has in its gulf Joaquin Cuadra after his departure from his previous band, my dear-loved DON JUAN MATUS. “Wicca: Spells, Magic And Witchcraft Through The Ages” is their second full-length album and I think it’s obvious, judging by the title, what this is all about. If you haven’t the opportunity to check this heavy psych trio yet and you have already drift in the past by bands like their ‘correligionists’ LOS NATAS or REINO ERMITAñO, you are going to not regret this music witchcraft trip for sure.
The second nugget of EL HIJO DE LA AURORA (meaning ‘Son of the Dawn’) contains 8 trippy retro psych rock tracks mixed with Doom tempo and the ‘dry’ production that the Russian label of R.A.I.G. Records successfully offers, making more occult and effective the total result. The Wiccan view of divinity inspiration and the early 70s’ sound is pervasive during the entire album and the old horror movies’ feeling dawned already on the “El Ojo Hipnótico” intro, reminding Rob Zombie’s fetish in similar introductions. Despite that, the music compass is noticeably different from their debut work, based on groovy riffage, combined with the lively drum work and emotional singing in Spanish without destruct you from the original terminus, being more song-oriented, more focused, intense, and heavier. “Der Golem” that comes next is so well-rooted in the 70’s heavy-rock tradition and delivers lots of BLACK SABBATH-esque vibes, while the grande opus of “Psicodrama” carries all the occult-doom heaviness of the world, based on the epic bass lines.
The psychedelic melting melodies continue to find bolt inside “Libro De Las Sombras” and its mind-blowing drums with the absolute blues duo of “El Espejo De La Bruja”/ “Más Allá De Toda Pena” giving us the appropriate space to catch our hallucinogen breaths. The groovy and theremin/moog synth/hammond-esque “Akasha” brings us back to the HIJO reality, broadcasting thousands of colourful waves (what a guitar solo is that, man!) and “Vril” drops slowly the curtain under Tania Duarte’s angelic timbre (REINO ERMITAñO), making every doomster’s heart break in pieces with its absolute emotional character.
I know that there are hundreds of this kind of bands out there, fulfilling every occult and Doom colour of your personal dreams. The truth though, is that many times they also lack of authenticity. In my opinion, EL HIJO DE LA AURORA's case is the bright exception confirming this rule and, fortunately for them, makes them the radiant example for imitation. Also, be sure that you are going to discover plenty of spells, magic and witchcraft inside this album’s 45 minutes and that’s why it’s highly recommended.
