The Silent Rage - Harvester Of Souls

(CD, Private, 2011)
Well what do you know; another Metal band from Greece. I might be living in the wrong country since Greece seems to have more Metal than anywhere else these days. This is an EP. I would have preferred it to be a full length release to get a better taste of the band. This is a Power Metal band and they know how to play the genre. The music is fast and ballsy and is very heavy. The vocalist is often accompanied by his band mates with plenty of backing vocals. This isn’t the type of Power Metal you would get from a band like RHAPSODY OF FIRE that has many keyboards and orchestral elements in the music. I like the straight up Thrash feel to the songs. They are up tempo and furious and sung with a lot of feeling. The bass sticks out way too much in the mix for my taste. I wonder if Steve Harris had something to do with it? I am just kidding, but you get the vastly over played bass here that Harris is famous for doing.
The band is very close to being something a bit heavier than Power Metal but I can still call them that due to the clean vocals and normal distortion on the guitar as well as softer production values. It doesn’t sound brick walled like a lot of extreme music does. Initially I was going to take it easier on these guys because they have such good singing and soloing as well as good lyrics, but the bass is really annoying. The bass guitar is supposed to add backbone to the music. Yes, I realize a lot of bands have bass players whose individual notes can be heard above the rest of the music, but not only is that the case here, but the notes don’t fit the rest of what is going on in the songs. It sticks out like a sore thumb and is very distracting. Hopefully when they get another full release out, they will also get a good producer that will tame the bass down a lot. As it stands I simply can’t tolerate it in more than small doses.
In short, if you can tolerate the bass playing that doesn’t mesh with the rest of the music, then you might like it, otherwise, I would spend my money on something else.
